Oregon 41, Ohio State 28. Ohio State looked in control after a 14-0 first quarter. Then Oregon scored 38 straight points, turning a Saturday showdown at the Horseshoe into one of the most surprising results of the season, and sending “Oregon vs Ohio State” racing up US search trends.

  • Where: Ohio Stadium, Columbus (attendance 103,551)

From 14-0 down to a blowout

Ohio State running back Bo Jackson scored twice in the first quarter, on runs of 16 and 8 yards, and the Buckeyes led 14-0. From there, Oregon took over. The Ducks scored on four of their next five drives, capped by a 2-yard Jamari Johnson touchdown run on the final play of the first half, and led 17-14 at the break.

The momentum swing came on special teams. A fake punt by Matayo Uiagalelei went for 30 yards and set up a Dierre Hill Jr. touchdown. Hill later broke a 48-yard run to make it 24-14, and Oregon never looked back.

Dylan Raiola steps up

Quarterback Dylan Raiola, starting since Dante Moore suffered a season-ending concussion against USC, completed 25 of 40 passes for 257 yards and two second-half touchdowns, including an 11-yard one-handed grab by Dakorien Moore. Head coach Dan Lanning credited the fake punt for changing the game and said his team showed glimpses of what it wants to be.

Ohio State’s problems

Ohio State has been without starting quarterback Julian Sayin since he injured his arm at Indiana on Oct. 17. Backup Luke Fahey, making his second start, put up big numbers, but most of his yards and both touchdowns came in the fourth quarter after the game was out of reach.

The loss is a historic stumble. Ohio State has now lost back-to-back games for the first time since 2011, and it is Ryan Day’s first three-loss season in eight years as head coach. Day admitted after the game that nobody in the program expected this.

Playoff impact

Ohio State’s path to the College Football Playoff just got much harder, and the Buckeyes are at risk of dropping out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2011. Oregon, meanwhile, has won two straight and has now won three of its last four meetings with Ohio State.
